History of Wheatgrass

Wheatgrass was identified as the finest grass food of all after a series of intensive agricultural research studies spearheaded by Dr. Charles Schnabel, an agricultural chemist in the 1930s-1950s out of Kansas. Dr. Schnabel performed direct comparisons of wheatgrass against other well regarded vegetables including spinach, broccoli and alfalfa and found that livestock fed only wheatgrass thrived compared to livestock only fed other types of vegetables. Dr. Charles Schnabel went further than just identifying wheatgrass as a superfood, he determined how to grow it and when to harvest it. He stressed the need for chemical free farming, soil enrichment and proper timing to produce optimal wheatgrass.

The genesis of Wheatgrass Juice

Dr. Ann Wigmore, the founder of Hippocrates Health Institute (HHI), a wellness education institute initially opened in Boston in 1956 then moved to West Palm Beach, Florida now celebrates 60 years in educating people on natural health practices. Dr. Wigmore was the first to start juicing wheatgrass in the 1950’s as she picked up a meat grinder from a local yard sale and got the idea to juice the grass. Dr. Wigmore suffered tremendously as a young girl from various health ailments including colon cancer later in her life. Drawing on her Lithuanian background and the experiences of grandmother, who was the village naturopathic doctor, Ann healed herself with wild weeds, herbs and greens. Witnessing the powerful healing properties of wheatgrass juice and other vitamin and enzyme-rich foods such as raw foods, first-hand inspired her to spend her life traveling the world sharing testimonies of healing, authoring many best sellers and growing HHI into the largest living foods institute in the world.
